A perfect blend of archaeological exploration above and below the water…sprinkled with white sand and palm trees. Who needs some sunshine?
We’ll arrive in Playa Del Carmen on Saturday, April 14, 2012.
Sunday – Only minutes from our beach front hotel, the reefs of Playa Del Carmen await our exploration. Two dives by boat will have us drifting over the second largest barrier reef in the world.
Monday – Across the channel, we find the island of Cozumel. Cozumel is known as a dive destination, and we’ll be doing a two dives in our favorite spots. Coral canyons and amazing swim throughs with barracuda, sting rays and sea turtles.
Tuesday – Bull Shark Dive – Yes…these are the big boys! While we normally don’t seek adrenaline while diving, we guarantee this will raise your heart rate as you sit on the bottom with dozens of these big pelagics surrounding you. The gentleness of these ferocious sharks will have you retelling this dive over and over again.
Wednesday – For an impressive look at the Mayan culture that once dominated Mesoamerica, we’ll visit Chichen-Itza. At its peak, this was one of the most important Mayan cities. Today, it has around 30 restored buildings. The Mayans, who were advanced mathematicians and astronomers, reflected these talents in their architecture. During equinox, a shadow in the form of a snake (symbolizing their god Kukulkan), falls along the main pyramid.
Thursday – We’re not done diving yet! Today we dive the Cenotes. The natural wonders of the Yucatan Peninsula are countless, but some of the most unique to the area are the cenotes. Cenotes are created by an underground river system and are fresh water sink holes that the Maya considered to be sacred. In addition they were an incredibly important resource as a fresh water source, and the Mayans also believed they were the entrance to the underworld. The water that gathers in these amazing natural wonders is a crystal clear turquoise color with a very pleasant temperature of 78°. The stalactites and stalagmites that form inside the cenotes are true natural works of art. In many, holes in the ceiling allow the sunlight to filter into the cenotes, giving the scene a magical feeling.
Friday – Your free day to explore the other wonders of Playa Del Carmen on your own. We’ll provide a selection for you to choose from including: XCaret Park, Tulum, 5th Avenue Shopping District, Freediving, Kite Surfing, Hobie Cat Sailing, ATV jungle tours….the list goes on.
Saturday – All good things must come to an end sometime…and today we’ll head back to the airport to return to Seattle. But don’t worry…we’ll be returning to Playa Del Carmen regularly..so you can join us on another adventure.
